About the Manuel A. Gonzalez Jr. Foundation

Legacy. Service. Sacrifice.

Who Are we?

The Manuel A. Gonzalez Jr. Foundation was established in honor of Correctional Officer Manuel A. Gonzalez, a devoted public servant who gave his life in the Line of Duty while protecting the people of the State of California.

Over 20 years ago, Officer Gonzalez was tragically stabbed while working inside Sycamore Hall at the California Institution for Men in Chino, California. He had served with the California Department of Corrections for 17 years — known among his peers as a true professional who never lost his composure, always remained steady under pressure, and was deeply committed to the safety of his fellow officers.

Colleagues described him as:

“A true professional who never lost his cool. He was always there to help a fellow officer.”
“When he walked in, you knew he was in control.”

He is survived by his wife and seven children. His legacy lives on not only in his family, but in the reforms and safety improvements that followed his sacrifice — including mandatory stab-resistant vests and enhanced housing protocols for dangerous inmates.

Why This Foundation Exists

The weight carried by those who serve — and by the families who stand beside them — is often invisible.

The Manuel A. Gonzalez Jr. Foundation was created to ensure that Veterans, First Responders, and Gold Star Families never walk that road alone.

Founded by Steven Gonzalez — son of a fallen officer, son of a United States Army Veteran, and a First Responder himself — this mission is deeply personal. It is rooted in lived experience, family legacy, and a commitment to brotherhood and service.

Through therapeutic fishing charters, peer support, and family-focused community events, the foundation provides healing environments where those who have sacrificed for our country and communities can reconnect, decompress, and strengthen one another.

Our Leadership

To honor and support Veterans, First Responders, and the Families of our Fallen Heroes by providing therapeutic ocean-based experiences that promote healing, resilience, and connection. We believe:

Continuing the Legacy

The legacy of Manuel A. Gonzalez Jr. is not defined solely by the tragedy of his passing — but by the courage with which he served, the respect he earned from his peers, and the strength of the family he left behind.

This foundation stands as a living commitment:

  • To honor the fallen.
  • To support the living.
  • To strengthen the families who carry the burden of service.

No One Fights Alone.
